Community-Engaged MPH Practicum Funding

Apply for specific positions designed to meet MPH Practicum requirements and support local public health efforts.

The Office of Community Engagement invites Brown University School of Public Health MPH students to apply for specific positions designed to meet MPH Practicum requirements and support local public health efforts that serve historically underserved populations in the state, and to connect student skill, knowledge, and interest to community-originated projects informed by organization, practitioner, and community member expertise. We are able to provide funding for these positions with ongoing partners.

Background

The Community-Engaged MPH Practicum Program establishes ongoing partnerships with community-based organizations that advance public health in Providence and Rhode Island. These partnerships, which continue for multiple years, surface and match community-identified projects to student skill, knowledge, and passion, and provide students with robust applied public health learning experiences. This pilot centers on partnership continuity, capacity building at the local level, and meaningful impact measurement and learning.

  • Positively impact health in Rhode Island
  • Effectively partner on community-identified challenges and community-led efforts
  • Provide meaningful experiential learning opportunities to students at SPH by matching their knowledge and skill to partner-identified projects.
  • Directions to apply are unique to each organization. Please explore the position descriptions for specific  application instructions.
  • Students may apply to multiple organizations on this list, but are encouraged to only select opportunities that most align with your experience and interest. Additionally, we ask that students communicate clearly with us and our partners about timelines when interviewing. We seek to avoid false commitments to organizations. The Office of Community Engagement can advise students on how to share timeline questions/concerns with our partners as you navigate potential interviews.
  • Organizations will specify their expectations around hybrid, remote, or in-person collaboration.
  • Once you apply to the specific organization, email sphcommunityengagement@brown.edu to let the Office of Community Engagement know that you have submitted your application. Title the subject of the email: “Applied to CE-Practicum with [ORGANIZATION]”. In the body of the email include the title of the position you applied for and the name of the partner organization.
  • You will work with the community organization and the Office of Community Engagement to complete the interview process. Each partner organization will select a student for their opportunity, and the Office of Community Engagement will be in touch with selected students to process funding and launch the program.

Recipients of the funding will be expected to:

  • Complete all necessary paperwork around establishing an MPH Practicum;
  • Follow all SPH policies;
  • Follow all community organization requirements and policies;
  • Participate in a 4-Part Training for Community Engaged Public Health Practice. These workshops will begin in the spring semester and continue through the summer, and will cover topics surfaced by community partners and critical to effective community collaboration;
  • Participate in 1-2 summer lunches with this cohort and supervisors to reflect on this experience and implications for your work in public health;
  • Provide feedback via an evaluation form to Sarah Bouchard on this experience;
  • Participate in a showcase lunch/dinner to share your work with SPH in August or early fall 2025.
  • Funding is available for Brown University School of Public Health MPH students seeking to complete their MPH Practicum requirement.
  • Funding is available for full 145 hour MPH Practicums, ranging up to $5,000 for the summer based on the priority criteria and availability of funding.
  • International students are encouraged to check with OISSS about your eligibility to receive funding and work on projects off campus.
  • Funding is limited. If you already qualify for or receive funding for your MPH Practicum from other sources, you are still eligible to apply for these available positions. However we will work with coordinating offices to connect you with the appropriate funding source. We do this so that we can maximize the number of funded opportunities available to students.

Please Note: We may reach out to applicants with clarifying follow-up questions regarding your application.
